Make a Gmail app password for OpenJobs

Recruiter email connects to Gmail with an app password. It takes about two minutes, and you can remove it at any time.

Why an app password

An app password is a 16-character code that lets one app use one Gmail account without your Google password. OpenJobs uses it to read recruiter email and to send the replies you approve. Google only offers app passwords on accounts with 2-Step Verification, because the code skips the second step at sign-in.

Five steps

  1. 1Turn on 2-Step Verification at myaccount.google.com/signinoptions/twosv. Skip this step if it is already on.
  2. 2Open myaccount.google.com/apppasswords and sign in if Google asks.
  3. 3Type OpenJobs as the app name and press Create.
  4. 4Copy the 16-character code Google shows. The spaces in it do not matter.
  5. 5In OpenJobs, open Settings, then Recruiter email. Paste the code into Gmail app password, type your Gmail address, and press Connect Gmail.

Recruiter email needs a paid plan, because OpenJobs uses an AI to sort mail and draft replies.

The setting is not available

Google shows that the setting you are looking for is not available.
Google turns app passwords off in three cases. Use a personal Gmail account instead.
  • A work or school account whose administrator turned app passwords off.
  • An account enrolled in Advanced Protection.
  • An account whose 2-Step Verification uses only security keys.

Remove it

Open myaccount.google.com/apppasswords, find OpenJobs and remove it. OpenJobs stops reading the inbox at once. Changing your Google password also removes every app password, so make a new one and paste it in Settings if that happens.

OpenJobs stores the app password encrypted, never shows it again, and never sends a reply you did not approve.
